Traditions and celebrations of Independence Day

Every Fourth of July, Americans celebrate Independence Day because it was on July 4th, 1776, that members of the Second Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence.

After its adoption, the Declaration was read to the public in different cities across the United States. Whenever people heard it, patriots would start with cheers and celebrations. Thus, this day began to be coined with different customs and today it has a variety of traditions.

July 4 became a holiday in different cities when the war ended in 1783. Parades, speeches, military events and fireworks became an important part of the holiday. Today, there are multiple ways in which people celebrate Independence, we collected a few for you here:

Parades

No matter where you are, you will certainly find a parade. Different cities and towns throw a small parade on the 4th of July. Parades often include cop cars, fire trucks, horses and even vintage cars.

Picnics and games

Over time, summertime activities became part of the holiday, including picnics, baseball games, contests about eating watermelon, trips to the beach and more.

The food

The common foods of the Fourth of July include hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, apple pie, pasta salads, chips galore, watermelon and more. And truth is, there´s something special about a holiday that makes the food taste even better.

Rodeos and candles

The American Indian rodeo is still a popular celebration in some parts of the country. There is a three-day pow-wow in Flagstaff, Arizona and the Littiz, Pennsylvania. Also, there is a candle festival characterized by hundreds of candles floating in water. In this celebration, a “Queen of Candles” is chosen.

Colonial attractions

Historic cities like Philadelphia and Boston have festivities that attract hundreds of people. In Boston, the USS John F. Kennedy often sails into the harbour while the Boston Pops Orchestra plays at the banks of the Charles River, a concert that is televised and features American music.

In the same way, Philadelphia holds its celebrations re-enacting historic scenes and reading the Declaration of Independence at the Independence Hall.

Fireworks

One of the most obvious ways to celebrate. Fireworks have been a part of the holiday since the very beginning and no matter where you’re watching them from, this is always a special moment. People gather together to delight in eruptions of light that declare the freedom and hope of the nation.
