United States

In 1868, Ann Jarvis established a committee to create a “Mother’s Friendship Day” with the hope to reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War. After a campaign followed by her daughter, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution in 1914 to officially designate the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Today, Mother’s Day is one of the holidays in which people spend the most money on. From home appliances to flowers or chocolates or trips, people buy all kinds of gifts.

Japan

In Japan, Mother’s Day takes place also on the second Sunday in May. The origin of this celebration dates back to the Showa period when Mother’s Day was about the commemoration of the birthday of Empress Kojun (the mother of Emperor Akihito). And the tradition of celebrating this day in modern Japanese culture started in 1913.

For Japanese people, the symbol of the day are beautiful carnations that represent a gentle strength that mothers possess. It’s usual for children to greet their moms with flowers.

France

French people celebrate the Fete des Meres in late May or early June, depending on when Pentecost takes place. It became an official celebration in 1950. Cards and flowers are bestowed, families get together for a relaxing day of food and gifts.

Mexico

For Mexicans, Mother’s Day is very serious. It is the busiest day of the year for Mexican restaurants. Mexicans celebrate with flowers, music, food and all kind of sweet moments including a morning serenade from mariachi singers.

Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, Mother’s Day is celebrated with a three-day festival called Antrosht. This festival takes place at the end of fall and people sing and dance in a feast where the traditional meal is prepared by the whole family.

China

Even though China imported the holiday of Mother’s Day, they have aligned the celebration with their own traditions of filial piety. Just like in the US, Mother’s Day is celebrated the second Sunday of May and people spend a day with the family and get moms gifts, chocolates, etc.
