Expanding your areas of expertise for more translation projects

The art of translation is a versatile service that can improve the development and international influence of various sectors. From the automotive industry, business and marketing, foreign affairs, to literature. Experienced translators have also benefited the public sector, just like medicine, sports, and gastronomy; including new areas of expertise like e-commerce, video games, audiovisual projects and many more. Companies are always looking for translators specialized on a specific target market, with the skills of delivering consistent and relevant communication solutions to each particular field.

For example, there's a mechanic that wants to translate into a target language a motor-vehicle repair business-license for starting his business, an auto repair contract template, some mechanic regulations and policies. In order to get fully translated documents, with the appropriate writing style for each type of text, and following the core ideas, terminologies, measurement units, layouts, and many other elements of the source, then he needs to contact an experienced translator in the field. In that case, a linguist with a background in Mechanical Engineering should be the most qualified translator for the job.

Continuing with the previous example, a translator specialized in Mechanical Engineering would have the experience to efficiently check the specific formats (fonts, tables, fields, pictures, page layout, etc.), and correct all linguistic errors (style, grammar, punctuation, orthography), just to name some of the specialties.

A document manipulated by an experienced linguist goes through a translation, transcription, editing, proofreading and review stages. This 5-step procedure guarantees many benefits:

• The translation is consistent within itself and throughout the document.
• The translation optimization is based on idiomatic expressions.
• Accurate spellchecking.

• Number format checking (use of correct decimal and thousand separators, date and time format) for correctness in target language.
• Use of measurement units according to instructions (or the country standards, if no instructions are available).
• Following of basic text formatting rules (regarding spacing, quotation marks, dashes, etc.).
• Blank spaces check. There won’t be double blanks or blank spaces before punctuation.
• Proper quotation marks revision.
• Upper case and lower case spelling review.
• Use of the right type of format (italics/bold etc.).

As a final idea, if a linguist wants to give his full potential in a project, then he should always remember to focus his services and knowledge on an area that he likes. Translator specialization should be done according to a mix between the areas that a linguist is passionate about and the market needs, in order to get more translation projects.
