Academic History

• Graduated in 2009 from the University of Southern California with a master’s degree in East Asian Languages and Cultures (GPA of 3.72). Research focus: contemporary Japanese and Chinese literature. Worked for four semesters as a teaching assistant for an East Asian literature course.

• Graduated in 2006 with high honors from DePaul University with a major in Japanese Studies and a minor in English (GPA of 3.86)

• Completed one year of study abroad (2003-4) at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. Coursework focused on Japanese language study.

• Completed eight-week intensive Mandarin Chinese study course (summer 2006) at Beijing Foreign Studies University

• Completed four-week Chinese to English social sciences translation seminar (summer 2009) at Fudan University, Shanghai

Work Experience

• 2006 – Present: Freelance Translator - Extensive experience with Japanese to English and Chinese to English translation, including academic papers in philosophy, psychology, and other fields, business-related websites, manga, and non-fiction materials. Recent translation projects include:

- A non-fiction book entitled How to Make Your Brain Work 50 Times Faster by Hideto Tomabechi (translated under the pen name Michelle Davis, pending publication from One Peace Books)
- Several chapters from the manga title Boku, Otaryman (to be used by the publisher as part of a promotional package)
- Several chapters from the book Psychic Therapy by Kinue Shima
- Numerous academic essays in the fields of psychology, philosophy, literature, and other humanities and social sciences fields

• January 2007 - December 2008: Travel Writer for PeterGreenberg.com, Studio City, California. Peter Greenberg is the travel editor for the Today Show. I’ve contributed numerous pieces to Peter’s website, including an article on budget travel in Japan, a guide to lesser-known attractions in Beijing, etc. Please contact me for the web addresses of these clips.

• January - July 2007: Translator/Multilingual Project Coordinator at HPI Racing, Foothill Ranch, California. Translated emails between three languages (Japanese, Chinese, and English); interpreted at executive-level meetings in Kunshan, China; aided in the creation of a variety of business documents from financial reports to product shipping schedules.

• August - December 2006: Japanese Language Quality Rater for Google, Inc. Work was done on a project basis and involved reviewing and evaluating Japanese language web content.

• April - May 2006: Bilingual Administrative Assistant (temporary) at the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago (JCCC). Responsibilities included updating the company’s member database using Microsoft Access, fielding phone calls, translating documents, and creating company mailings in Japanese.

• 2000 - 2005 - Teacher's assistant at Kumon Math and Reading Center, Granger, Indiana. Responsibilities included tutoring students in English, including some Japanese children whom I taught in Japanese, and grading completed homework.

Honors and Achievements

• 2008 – Received second place in the Southern California Chinese Bridge speech and performance competition (gave a speech in Chinese and performed a guqin song on guitar)

• 2005 – Achieved the Level One designation on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (the highest level offered, indicating fluency in the language)

• 2002 - Received first prize in Kobe College Corporation essay contest, winning three weeks of fully paid language study in Kobe, Japan

• 2002 - Recipient of Ball State University literary competition first prize in short story category
